While the cosmetic industry has come a long way in terms of acknowledging women of all colors and our different needs for makeup applications and colors, I do believe that there is a need for a wider variety of shades for women of darker complexions.
As a woman with a darker skin tone, I often find it a bit frustrating when I am unable to find that perfect foundation or coverage due to lack of diversity in the makeup industry. In a recent interview with Essence(.com), singer Kelly Rowland dished on plans to launch her own cosmetic line alongside her makeup artist, Sheika Daley. Although there’s been no word on a company name or release date, Kelly assures us that chocolate girls will be covered.
“My makeup artist Sheika Daley and I are actually starting a makeup line we’re making sure we make, well, we’re starting off with lashes and then we’re going to have it grow for all women,” Rowland told Essence. “But definitely making sure we have our chocolate girls covered. Gotta get the chocolate girls in there! We have to have that, you know. I think Iman has done a beautiful makeup line and I want to do it too!”
I am totally in support of Kelly Rowland’s upcoming cosmetic project. I hope that it not only increases product available to women of darker complexions, but also caters to the market of the average woman in terms of affordability. This will give us all new products to try and not to mention it’ll be created by someone who can relate.
So, thank you Kelly.
What do you think about Kelly Rowland’s new project?
